Cayman Beaches

Cayman beaches is dedicated to those beaches on Grand Cayman that aren’t Seven Mile Beach or in the East End and it’s a companion page to this our page of Grand Cayman beaches.

There aren’t too many types of beaches on Grand Cayman because almost all of them are sandy. The surrounding reef keeps them sheltered from waves that might sweep the sand off them. The one exception is…

Frank Sound’s one area of the island where there are rocky beaches of bare, sharp ironshore swept by breakers rolling directly in from the sea, no protective reef here.

Frank Sound — Rocky Beach

So, not a traditional beach, in the sense there’s nowhere to sunbathe or swim, but Frank Sound is an interesting spot if you’re interested in rocky beaches and the creatures that go with them. I’ve always liked poking about in rock pools, ever since I was a kid, and Frank Sound has that in spades:-)

Frank Sound also has the ‘world famous’ (world famous all over Grand Cayman, anyhow) blowholes. These are natural fissures in the ironshore that squirt out water when the breakers crash against the shore.

Grand Cayman ‘comedians’, warn visitors against seeing the blowholes and Hell in the same day because, as they ironically suggest, the effect may be too overwhelming. I know what they mean, they are low-key, but I still like Hell and the blowholes.

I like rocky beaches because sea creatures live on and around them, much more so than sandy beaches. The pools among the rocks include sea anemones, shrimp, small crabs, and small fish. In the gullies, where the sea flows among the rocks, bigger fish and crabs hang out, which is good for kids with the beach toy net.

Cayman Kai: One of the sandy Cayman beaches

Cayman Kai has a small public beach with a playground for the kids, BBQ pit and picnic tables. Like the busier Rum Point, across the road, it’s popular with locals as well as visitors. It’s generally quiet because it doesn’t have all the amenities of Rum Point, which isn’t a problem if you brought your own food and drink. If you didn’t, Rum Point is close enough to walk over to for snacks.

There’s good snorkeling off the beach at Cayman Kai, as this video from Kasey at Sunplay.com shows.

Maybe, you’re thinking you could work in Grand Cayman. If so, our Cayman Jobs page can give you a start to making that dream come true.

Or maybe next time you’re laying on the beach, you’ll be thinking you could build a site and pay for your trip with your holiday memories and photos. And there’s a good chance you can.

A year or so ago, I was wondering how to make more use of my writing and photos and the result is this site, and others to come. How did we do it? Visit our About Us page to find out.

After you’ve enjoyed all that the Grand Cayman has to offer, check out the beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico.
