Getting to Grand Cayman Airport or arriving by sea: Planes and Ships
Getting to the Grand Cayman airport is easy. Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, New York and Boston all have direct flights from the US, Toronto from Canada, and British Airways from London's Heathrow.
As well, many different airlines fly into the 'Owen Roberts International Airport' to give the airport its proper name; American Air (from Miami), Air Canada (from Toronto), Air Jamaica (from Kingston), British Airways (from Nassau in the Bahamas), Continental Airlines (from Newark and Philadelphia), Delta Airlines (from Atlanta), Northwest Airlines (from Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul), US Airways (from Charlotte), and Spirit Airlines (from Ft. Lauderdale). Other cities you can fly from are Chicago, Durham/Raleigh, Buffalo, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, and Washington DC.
Cayman Airways is the Cayman Islands own airline. It flies five regular services between the other Cayman islands (Little Cayman and Cayman Brac) each day, as well as flights to the US and other Caribbean destinations.
The Grand Cayman airport has all the facilities you'd expect from a busy tourist connection; money exchange office and automatic machine, restaurants, cafeterias and bars, gift and duty free shops, Chemist Shop/Drug Store, Help Desk, and Post Office for those last minute cards to people you forgot.
Car rentals
and the Taxi Rank are right outside the terminal in the glorious sun and warm breezes. After a long northern winter, even something as mundane as picking up a car feels like heaven.
A large number of visitors to Grand Cayman, about 200,000 a year, arrive by cruise ship. Many Caribbean cruises make stops at George Town usually for a few hours or a day. Lots of those visitors stop off at the waterfront bars -- principally Margaritaville and Hard Rock Cafe -- or the Duty Free Shopping on the waterfront.
For the more adventurous, however,
tour buses
line up at the dock for trips to Hell, the
Turtle Farm
, and
Seven Mile Beach.
You can also fly into Grand Cayman airport and meet your ship at George Town after staying a day or two on the island.
