Looking for Grand Cayman Restaurants?

Here are some Grand Cayman Restaurants we tried and liked.

First let me say I love Caribbean food. Actually, I like pretty well any food but Caribbean is high on my list of the world's cuisines so my personal favorite Grand Cayman restaurant is, or maybe that should be are, Champions I and II. Run by authentic Caribbean folks, they make the best 'Heavy Cake' around for my money. You'll find them at 43 Eastern Ave in George Town, or call 345-949-7882. They also do buffets, which are great for sampling dishes you've never heard of or are unsure about, and great for trying all the different Grand Cayman food.

Another place we liked was Paradise Bar and Grill down at the waterfront in George Town. Sitting out under the stars, looking out over the sea, eating Conch Chowder and Lobster and Avocado salad was a perfect way to end a busy day. Being down at the harbour makes them a perfect place to eat after trips on the submarine or semi-submersible. They're also at the quieter end of the waterfront, 96 South Church St, for those of us who like to take life easy. Call them at 345-945-1444 for more information.

While we're down at the waterfront, don't forget the other waterfront restaurants, like Hard Rock Cafe at 43 South Church St. It has all the usual Hard Rock decor and menu, as well as the music. Provided there isn't a cruise ship (or ships) in, you won't have a problem getting into either of these places but to be sure, phone 345-945-2020.

If South Church St is the quiet end of the waterfront, North Church St is the noisy one. Starting with Margaritaville and working your way north past Hammerheads and Rackhams' Pub make for a busy, bustling evening out, particularly when the cruise ships are in.

After floating around on a giant 5 star hotel filled with food and drink, you'd think a bar and restaurant would be the last places folks would want to go but apparently not.

Portofino Wreck View, on Wreck Point, is an Italian restaurant out at the East End, not far from the Morritts, and it's pretty good too. We had local dishes, like marinated conch and jerk chicken, rather than Italian and it was a great way to spend a lazy Caribbean lunch hour. Frigate bird hoping for leftovers Portafino's looks out on the jagged remains of a freighter that ran aground on the reef and it's different. Having a real wrecked ship beats old car license plates or hub caps (or whatever) as a theme.

Eating out under the warm sun with the sea spread out before you is always a pleasure and the food's good too. This Frigate bird made a number of hungry-looking passes overhead while we ate but we didn't oblige by leaving it any.

I can't miss out Ivan's (named for the Hurricane that devastated the island in late 2004) at the Morritts Resort. The food is fabulous and the location, overlooking the new pier and beach, is romantically Caribbean. Call 345-947-7449 for a reservation.

Other Grand Cayman Restaurants to try are:

Right next door to the Morritts Resort and Ivan's, is Castro's Hideaway Beach Bar and Restaurant in the Reef Resort. It's right on the water too and features the Barefoot Man, a local recording artist. The food is Caribbean International and well worth a visit. Their number is: 345-947-3100.

Over the Edge is also out at the East End -- in this case at The Waterfront in Old Man Bay. It's reasonably priced and excellent. For their menu, call: 345-947-9568

While we're in the East End, I have to mention Roland's Garden at Cottage. Roland's is a bit different from the usual Grand Cayman restaurant (or most other places either). For one thing you don't get a bill; you pay what you think the meal was worth, which can make you feel uneasy. (Most people pay $50, we were told. I can't confirm that, you'll have to make your own decision). As well, you bring your own wine and you don't get a menu as such. Roland cooks whatever he feels like cooking and serves it in his garden. Phone ahead to see what's on: 345-926-7670

As with all resort areas, Grand Cayman Restaurants have discounts you can pick up at your hotel. Be sure to make use of them because the Cayman dollar can make eating out feel expensive at times.

Our list is only a nibble from a feast of restaurants in Grand Cayman. Below is an opportunity to tell us all about your favorite.

Local food we enjoyed June 2010  Not rated yet
We liked Over the Edge, South Coast Bar & Grill and Liberty's very much - didn't have a chance to check out Vivine's but heard it was good.
