Grand Cayman Scuba Diving: Who to Call?

Grand Cayman scuba diving is practically the reason the island exists – other than banking, of course. Grand Cayman’s unique geology, mountainous peaks poking out from tremendous depths, provide perfect conditions for diving

Sheer rock walls plunge into deep trenches, while shallower waters breed corals in abundance. The variety of different experiences bring divers back year after year and ensure GrandCayman is always high on the list of World’s Best Dive Sites. It’s not just geography that makes Grand Cayman scuba diving a ‘best in class’. The weather and sea conditions play their part too. Water temperatures average 78 degrees F in winter and 84 degrees F in summer. Visibility is typically more than 100 ft so you’re going to see what you came to see.

The Cayman Islands are soon to get a new ‘reef’. It has been announced that the Cayman government has taken ownership of an old US warship, which will be sunk to become a new dive site. The USS Kittiwake, once a submarine rescue vessel, is the second artificial reef created from an old warship. It follows the sinking of a Russian destroyer in Cayman waters in 1996.

Here are some of the companies that can show you around Grand Cayman’s underwater geography. It’s as beautiful as the island itself.

First I’ll start with a company that isn’t strictly speaking a Grand Cayman scuba diving outfit at all. Cathy Church’s Underwater Photo Centre and Gallery (345-949-7415) on South Church street not only rents cameras, it provides instructional charters on how to take underwater pictures. Go to: www.cathychurch.com for details.

So you don’t think Cathy Church was responsible for the pictures on this site, I promise they’re all our own — and I’ve no doubt they would have been better with some tuition.

Now on to companies that focus on Grand Cayman scuba diving:

Dive Tech (345-946-56580 dives at two locations, Turtle Reef and Cobalt Coast. They provide many different Cayman diving experiences, including night dives. Learn more at: www.divetech.com

Don Foster’s Dive (345-945-5132) is located in George Town and also at the Comfort Suites on Seven Mile Beach so you’ll have no difficulty finding them. Alternatively: www.donfosters.com

Eden Rock Diving Center (345-949-7243) is located on South Church Street, a few minutes drive from downtown George Town. Like most companies they provide equipment rental and beginner training. Look for: www.edenrockdive.com

Neptune’s Divers (345-945-3990) provides diving for small groups (maximum of 8 divers) and an excellent beginners course. Find them at www.neptunesdivers.com

Ocean Frontiers (345-947-7500) is located in East End and they dive from two locations, Compass Point in East End and Kaibo Yacht Club just beyond Rum Point. Their website is: www.oceanfrontiers.com

Oh Boy Charters (345-949-6341) does a range of water sport activities as well as scuba diving.

Quabo Dive (345-945-4769) caters to small groups and has accommodation packages available on request. Their website: www.caymandiving.com gives more details.

Red Baron Charters (345-945-4744) does sailing charters and also private diving charters for parties of six to eight divers.

Diver feeding fish, Grand Cayman Many resorts have Cayman diving schools train first-time divers in their own pools so check with your resort before signing up to anything.

The final word on Grand Cayman scuba diving would not be complete without a mention of Red Sail Sports who do pretty well everything watersports related, including scuba diving and snorkeling. They have six locations around Grand Cayman at a number of resorts , Hyatt Rgency (345-949-8745), Marriott Resort (345-949-6343), Marriott Courtyard (345-946-4433), Morritts Tortuga Club (345-947-2097), Rum Point (345-947-9203), and Westin Resort (345-949-8732). Go to www.redsail.com for more information.
