Grand Caymen or, more correctly, Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman islands. It has two 'sister' islands, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
The three islands are in the Caribbean, just south of Cuba. Despite the name 'grand' for the largest island, the whole group is so small it's easy to miss them on the map. Go to our map page and zoom out and you'll see what I mean.
Where is Grand Cayman island? Along with the Sister Islands, it's in the Caribbean and, being just south of Cuba, it has a similar climate to Cuba except the Cayman Islands are too small for the kind of tropical forest you see on the larger Caribbean islands like Cuba.
Culturally, Grand Cayman is part of the British West Indies or BWI, and, perhaps because of that, it has fewer of the social problems you may experience on other islands. The large banking sector too means the island has the feel of a modern centre but with sunshine, unlike New York or London.
Our Getting There page tells you where to find flights from most of the big centers but how long will it take to get there?
The good news is Grand Cayman is near the top end of the Caribbean and, because its airport can take bigger planes, getting there is pretty straightforward.
From Toronto, Buffalo NY, New York or Chicago, you can expect to be in the air about six hours. Your journey time may be longer if it isn't a direct flight, of course.
Flying time from Dallas or Houston is between 5 to 7 hours.
Florida is much better, only one and a half hours from Miami, give or take a tad.
London is 13 hours but that does include a stop.
