Stingray City Cayman Islands
Stingray City Cayman Islands is an area in North Sound where wild stingrays gather to be fed by vacationers. It's a Cayman Islands must-do activity but if you can't bring yourself to swim with wild stingrays, it's almost as good as a must-see event. Just watching your fellow vacationers passing out raw seafood to a whirling mass of stingrays, is worth the boat trip.
Stingray City is one of two places to feed stingrays in the Cayman Islands, the other is
Sandbar.
Stingray City is deeper water than Sandbar so you need to be a more confident swimmer. Both locations are, so the story goes, where fishermen would clean their catch before landing the fish on shore. Stingrays congregated for this daily free meal -- a sort of stingray soup kitchen. Today, the 'catch' is visitors and they pay to hand feed the stingrays.
Both Stingray City and Sandbar can be fitted into a day long excursion from a cruise ship though it would be hard to fit into a short visit as it takes some time to get there.
Here's the Red Sails catamaran surrounded by swimmers.
Another one of the many boats that go out to Stingray City and Sandbar. Though they are the two distinct locations, they're very close to each other and both well inside the shallow waters of the Sound, as this picture shows. The beach is clearly visible and not so far away, which should give confidence to even the most nervous of visitors.
